Isner 3.70-Mahut 2.68.

These are not the train times to a particular destination but two names that will for ever be linked and married together like Gilbert and Sullivan or Lennon and MaCartney. Why? If you have been away from planet earth or hiding under a stone for the past few days you will be unaware of the minding boggling game of tennis these chaps have played at Wimbledon. The game started on Tuesday night at 6.09pm on court 18 and finished some 11 hours and 5 minutes later on Thursday 4.48pm. It was not so much a matter of who won-the game of tennis won-and the extraordinary courage and stamina of Isner and Mahut. A whole collection of records were broken apart from the duration of the game. I won't trouble you with the other statistics other than to say-its very unlikely that they will be broken any day soon! Although it has been suggested that if there is in a 5 set match at Wimbledon in the future the number of games should be limited. As this is somewhat unlikely it would be unwise and churlish to change the rules for such a remote probability. The following day Isner was knocked out in straight sets. Needless-to-say the bloke was knackered. Sometimes a particular game in sport excites our spirits and imagination. This had all the necessary ingredients of a gladiatorial battle royal but were they sufficient? I think they were!
