HSBC and tax.
What is it about bankers that they feel they can run rings around us all and we collectively just put up with it? The government of Cameron with his chums in the City of London are not fundamentally interested in chasing them all the way to the courts. Boy Osborne that callow chap similarly couldn't give a dam. However if they were benefits cheats stealing a few bob from the government then all hell will let lose and prison would beckon. Tax evasions appears to be a national sport that we are rather good at. In the next Olympics we should enter it as a sport. I cannot for the life of me understand why the government is so dilatory is pursuing these criminals? Do they secretly admire them? Its Robin Hood in reverse. Its rampant capitalism that stinks and we must do something as tax evasion is estimated to be worth over $118 billion. So the snouts stay in the trough. If on the other had we had the tax - its a lot of nurses and doctors for the NHS. At the same time the recently ennobled Lord Green was in charge of the shop. They all think they are above the law and it doesn't apply to them. The banks profitability came before obeying the law of the UK. The European Savings Directive makes this a criminal offence across the EU to seek to evade legitimate tax liabilities. Lord Green avoided answering the questions put to him on Monday evenings Panorama.
