Russian money in London town.
Over the last 20 year and since the demise of the old Russian state we have witnessed an immigration of Russians into London. Some think this has gone too far with the property prices increasing to a staggering degree as a result. There may be a causal connection, but there are many other forces at work, so we should not be so myopic and blame the Russians for all out woes. Nevertheless watching the programme on BBC Two Rich, Russian and Living in London was an education. We tend to think of all Russians as members of the Mafia or have acquired their wealth by other nefarious means. This is of course not the case, as the country has many working in the wealth creation business, like owning fashion houses, mobile phone companies, restaurants chains etc. What they all appear to want is a good education for their kids - and who could argue with that - and London day schools are able to offer a vast list of fine establishments. An interesting feature was the introduction of the debutante ball held in 2014 at the Old Billingsgate Fish Market in the City of London. It looked an amazing event with many of the participants going to special classes to help them learn the correct steps and hoping to meet their prince charming.
