Over the past few years there has been much discussion about whether social mobility is continuing or has just stalled? Well we have now got an answer to the perplexing riddle. The definitive research says according to professor John Goldthorpe of Oxford University there is increasing downward mobility but upward mobility has indeed stalled. The reasons are very complex. But some reasons given is that getting onto the property ladder is now, and especially in London far more problematic, unless there is help from family or inherited wealth. Moreover due to university fees students now have a mountain of debt on leaving university, so paying off this is an increasing burden. In addition there is now no guarantee that even going to university will provide you with a good middle class professional life style. There is increased job insecurity with zero hours employment making people feel more insecure and thereby reducing upward mobility.
Aspiration is an important driver and motivation for a democratic societies. If this is thwarted over time then there will be unintended consequences. This sclerotic system must change - the status quo is not an option for the long term health of a so called democratic nation.
