Blue Note at 75.
Any lover of jazz will know this label it helped develop jazz from the cradle to today - where it is fit and grown up citizen of the world. Started by a German immigrant Alfred Lion who was getting away from unemployment and Hitler. The first artist were the pianists Lux Lewis and Albert Ammons. When you think of the galaxy of great jazz artists all have played on this label ranging from: Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Ella Fitzgerald and many other besides. In addition the sleeve cover for the vinyl was a piece of art in itself. I still have may such delights in my rack of jazz memorabilia. Jazz is able to cut to the quick, there is an emotional intensity with its roots deep in the southern sod of America where the music was synonymous with poverty and being black. Many times there were fights and sometimes even killings at venues due to the hated of the Klu Klux Klan. Despite this the music has now crossed the world from these humble beginnings. Lets hope that Blue Note continues for another 75 years.
