What went wrong in Afghanistan and was it worth the blood and iron?
So its apparently 'mission accomplished' in Afghanistan. The loss of many lives since our re-entry into that benighted country in December 2001 following the 9/11 attack on American. Considering the cacophony of voices from: politicians, generals, various war lords, the Taliban fighters - all saying conflicting things who were we to listen to? This polyglot needless-to-say led to confusion on the grand scale. This was of course a repeat of the debacle of the 19 century when we went in blindly to create even more chaos. All this can be seen in a programme that brings light into the darkness that is this world trouble spot in Afghanistan: The Lion's Last Roar on BBC Two last night. The British developed what was called with naivety 'the ink spot strategy' - in Helmand province they would locate the resources and make the best use of them as they could. Unfortunately there was no over arching plan for the long term reconstruction. This created a de facto vacuum with little power for the rest of the region, consequently the Taliban then moved into it with alacrity. If you lost a family member in this war how would you now feel?
