Here we are in Siracusa in Sicily, its been a hot day are we are knackered after travelling about 150 miles to this delightful small place called Artio a B&B. My room is large and very pleasant with a view overlooking a little patio with a few tables and chairs. After dropping off our bags we went out for a bite to eat in a local tavernia tucked away down a little alley. Great food of cold meats and salad washed down with some Belgium beers. Siracusa is a wonder to behold with the Mediterranean sea washing against the rocky outpost. There are lots of fashionable shops, I went into Zara and bought a jumper in a metallic gun boat grey.
Tonight we plan to go out for dinner to a restaurant called Retro Scena. My goodness was it good a place for the gourmet, after more good red wine home to bed. Tomorrow we plan to see the Greek amphitheater that is reputed to be able seat some 15,000 spectators at the height of Greek historical theatre. The plan never came into action as there were many other delights to tempt us - for example the cathedral which is truly magnificence combining three architectural styles - Greek, Norman and Medieval. The Dumo dedicated originally to Athena has the Greek pillars still intact supporting the building after 2,500 years.
Plato came to Siracusa and delivered a message regarding good government that was not well received by the ruler at that time. Clearly nothing has changed in that regard. Politics is a rum old business full of skulduggery and bloated ambition with serpentine morality. Still someone has to do the dirty work of cleaning out the drains.
On the Monday we visited to Leonardo Da Vinci Machines exhibition that has been touring Europe. Hie genius was on display with such a variety of wheels and pullies that were mind boggling. Then home to the wondrous palatial restored farm house that is Casa Serena. Back to Blighty on Tuesday morning.
