What Dr Anthony Seldon says on schools.

As someone who has a forthright opinion on education you can always rely on Dr Anthony Seldon Master of Wellington College as the man you can guarantee to say it straight. So in The Daily Telegraph today he applauded Sir Michael Wilshaw the Chief Inspectors of Schools at Ofsted for his hard work on the changes in state education and the pioneering work of Michael Gove the previous education secretary. So we await the new broom Ms Nicky Morgan and how she carries out this most important job. Seldon says that the sine qua non is the leadership from the top by headmaster and headmistresses across all branches of education whether state or private. However Seldon goes further and argues that underpinning a good society is what he called 'character building' in all schools. How to codify character building is the issue? What are the necessary touchstone issues that can be described and put into practice. He cites actors at the Royal Shakespeare Company or musicians and singers at the Royal Opera House and the discipline they bring to their chosen professions. He also suggested good time keeping one might add having clean polished shoes, being prepared for a particular class of study and cleanliness in general.
Self discipline appears to be what is needed in all our young people. The world of work does require discipline, whether you feel like going into work or not. We all have those days, but being a professional in no matter what area of careers you may chose self discipline is the watch word and part of the package. What if you've grown up in a chaotic family where there no discipline at all - even more reason the schools plays a in loco perentis role.
So Dr Seldon how will the future of education look say in ten years from now - will the UK be doing as well or better?
