Has the internet banished boredom?

In a thoughtful article in The Times today Janice Turner raises this important issue in our modern society. The mores and etiquette of the 'smart phone' has been outlined by Debretts the bible of the aristocracy. The do's and don't have been describe, but one of the best things of this new world is that as Turner has said its 'abolished boredom' especially when on holiday. All those hours of spare time that have to be filled can now be eliminated. She described how so many men have to get their fix when on holiday from their electronic devices. She points out since the increased use of the electronic world, crime rates have 'nosed dived' in the west - was it boredom that made us criminals after all? We can read all our most loved newspapers while stuck half way up a remote Tuscan hillside - or browse the latest things to do in London when we get back to civilization - note the theatre, music, ballet, opera and exhibition reviews. The absolute balm of the internet - you are now never alone or bored - ennui is a thing of the past!
