Baroness Warsi has resigned from the government because of an 'amoral policy' on Gaza.

The government finds its self this afternoon is a deeper hole because of a 'lack of a moral' policy on the current conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The problem is that they appear to see the situation as one of making sure they are 'even handed' and therefore not coming down on one side or the other. In any other international conflict there would not be this fear of being accused of being antisemitic. This therefore makes any clear denunciation of the Israeli policy problematic. There is a distinction between being critical of their current belligerent foreign policy - this is not necessarily being antisemitic. Warsi has seen this lack of a strong and clear moral message indefensible. Moreover she thought it to be 'disproportionate' response to Hamas with so many innocent women and children being killed. As a prominent Muslim and a women she has an important role both within her local community and the wider conservative Party. Her loss to the government will be considerable and should not be underestimated. Any other country behaving is a similar manner to Israel would have received international opprobrium from all concerned but not Israel. This has give them a 'blank cheque' to behave with apparent impunity. In addition there is the political issue of staying 'in step with the US' and their policy towards this conflict. If the 'rule of law' means anything this should not be the case? However there are some who are preparing a case against Israel to put before the International Criminal Court in the Hague as to the possibilities of a charge of 'war crimes' against the state of Israel. These are difficult times in international politics, but unless a stand is taken this conflict in Gaza will act as a 'recruiting sergeant' for more radial Muslim extremism in the near future - the British government should take cognizance of this fact.
