Why are we as a nation so popular at the moment?

According to research published today and commissioned by the British Council of kids between the ages of 20 and 35 Britain - is seen as being very 'cool place'. Why is this the case? There are clearly a number of reasons for this change in international attitudes, one is the London Olympics in 2012 and this is being enhanced and built on with the current Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. We are seen now as 'less stuffy and up-tight' overall as a people. The things that the survey noted was the we are known for are: Shakespeare, the Queen and David Beckham in that order. In addition our sence of humour, good manners and fun. Also the creative industries like theatre, the arts in general and art in particular - Bansky, Tracy Emin and many others were sited as important role models for students across the globe. There are the plethora of galleries, museums like the British Museum and royal places starting with the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace, Holroyd Palace in Edinburgh and many more beside. Moreover there is the endemic music culture stating with of course the Beatles, the Rolling Stone, The Who and many others including Morrisssey once of the Smiths and a clutch of fine international female singers like Adele, Dido and Amy Winehouse. This cornucopia of talent is busing across the whole country and not just centered in the capital, but in Glasgow, Manchester, Newcastle, York, Cardiff and Belfast. We have about to start the Edinburgh International Festival and Fringe with some 60,000 shows across four weeks - if that is't gargantuan I don't know what is?
There are of course things that some visitors don't like our infamous weather, our propensity to heavy drinking - this goes back a long way and dear old Shakespeare mentions it many times in his plays and in particular in Henry IV parts One and Two - with Mistress Quickly trying to keep Falstaff and Hal under control - without and notable success.
So as a nation with have much to celebrate and be pleased and proud of with not least what many say they love about us from overseas our collective - modesty and understatement - I rest my case!
