"They say its over - well it is now".

This statement was made at the end of the 1966 game between England and Germany. last night brought the 'curtain down' on a glorious month of scintillating football. The fact the Germany won against Argentina won't go down as one of the best matches, nevertheless it was 'all good fun'. What do we do now? Thankfully its only a matter of a few weeks before the start of the new season in August when we can get our next 'fix. This particular festival of matches has brought all countries together that love the sport, old adversaries have evaporated - I was cheering Germany on to victory! Angela Merkel will do well out of this victory politically she was there last night cheering on her team. I didn't do that back in 1966 but England then won, but that's another story. In Melvyn Bragg's book 12 Books that Changed the World he includes The Rule Book of Association Football (1863) along side the Magna Carta and Shakespeare that have influenced world history. And who could possibly argue with the inclusion of football as the new 'world religion'? I know there are one or two people still out there who don't follow the game but an estimated one billion did last night. Brazil against all expectation put on a great games, despite being kicked out by Germany 7 - 1. They picked themselves up from their drubbing - but  played without passion on Saturday against Holland and lost.
So we go to Russia 'cowboy country synonymous with corruption and the mafia' in 2018 for the next World Cup. Will England do any better or will we again be booted out in the first round, or perhaps not even make it to the jamboree?
