Crossing the Rubicon.
On Monday the Church of England crossed the Rubicon and announced that women will in future be eligible to become bishops, this could also herald the day when in the future we shall see an Archbishop of Canterbury in my life time. Archbishop Welby was instrumental in these changes his more 'conciliatory' approach has born fruit for him and women across the church. The debated about this that has lasted some 20 years a relative short period when you consider the age of the Christian church. When this was first discussed at the the General Synod it produced more 'heat than light' but times have now moved on. So the meeting in York of the same Synod has important international implications for the country as a whole and for their place as the leading church in the countries protestant congregation. For those who are not Christians this discussion and conversation has appeared a bit 'quaint' and out of touch with modern times when women increasingly have important places in society not least a monarch and former prime minister. So we think they have come 'late to the party' however its only a good day for less bigoted and free thinking people across the land. There has never been an issue of the whether it contravened the scriptures, as from the very earliest followers of Jesus there were always women playing a leading role in supporting him in his ministration. For those like me who have been committed to the equality of women as long as I can remember this is a jolly good day and one that will be looked back upon in the future as a marker of historic significance. There is now now going back. So let us today celebrate this last hurdle in the long struggle for equality of women in their place in the history of the Church of England. Praise the lord!
