The Commonwealth Games - Glasgow 2014.
As a family of nations there are few comparable organisations than The Commonwealth - stretching across the globe in a multitude of different languages, races, classes and nationalities with the Queen as its head. So I watched with pride and astonishment at the opening ceremony from Glasgow last night of all these nations parading onto the Celtic Football pitch in their colourful tunics of many colours - like Joseph's coat. So from today we have 12 days of sport for all tastes and appetites. I want to see the track cycling at the Sir Christopher Hoy stadium named after that iconic cyclist who has done so much for the sport both nationally and internationally. We had the Queen arrive just as the Red Arrows did their 'fly past' overhead with their red, white a blue smoke blowing out the back of the jets as they soared across Glasgow. We were all blessed with extra fine weather, atypical for that city as we generally associated that part of Scotland with wind and horizontal rain. The spectacular show that was put on was delightful - showing just what what a 'fun nation' Scotland is. I have got to know that nation as my daughter was at Edinburgh University for four years and I loved the place. I also traveled there on a number of occasion north of the boarder for holidays and once 'hitchhiked' from John o Groats to London with one lift from Fort William all the way to London - those were the days. So lets enjoy the next 12 days of sport so - 'come on in' as the say in Scotland.
