More fuel has been added to the debate about - assisted suicide with the death of Tony Nicklinson, or assisted killing as the opponents call it! He died yesterday morning after suffering from pneumonia after contracting it over the weekend. He was devastated by the decision of the High Court last week, not to allow for his - assisted suicide. This case has again raised the very contentious issue of whether someone who is - compos mentis should be allowed help to die. It seems to me that if there are sufficient safeguards in place to protect the vulnerable - then this option should be allowed for those who want it. Most rational people don't want to hang around is a state of physical infirmity, when life is too unpleasant. In a recent survey taken of 2,000 adults - the majority said that living to 83 was considered a good innings, and anything beyond that was a bonus. So public opinion should be taken into account by Parliament when they next considered this vexed issue. The religious lobby are the ones generally not supportive of any change in the current legislation, but things need to change the - status quo is just not working in a humane way. Tony Nicklinson is a good example of that.
