Is Bercow a berk?

Since its inception in 1258 the role of Speaker of the House of Commons has been one of controversy. On Tuesday John Bercow - the current incumbent in an interview on Radio 4 let rip as his opponents. Some have suggested in the commons that he is a bit of a turncoat and talks - poppycock, and is somewhat overblown with his own importance, and lacks the necessary obsequiousness of Mr Speaker. He will have non of this, and has coming out fighting, arguing that he is seeking to redress the balance of power between the over mighty executive and parliament. This has needless-to-say made him many enemies in high places. When I think back on the speakers I have known in recent years - they have all courted odium. Bernard Weatherill (1983-1992) a one time tailor, was dismissed as being below stairs. Betty Boothroyd (1992-2000) the first female speaker - a one time Tiller Girl - was seen as vulgar and too loud. Michael Martin (2000-2009) was seen a too dim and partisan. Mr Bercow who took over from the disgrace Martin, has brought a bit of vim and vigor to his role. He has a colourful wife - Sally who is rather glamorous and sexy. So as a couple create envy by the bucket load. So is Bercow a berk or just doing his job?
