Having a purpose in life.

It shouldn't be a surprise - having a purpose in life is beneficial for our mental and cognitive health. This is particularly true as we get older and potentially more isolated and with the risk of loneliness. Research published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry examined - long term data on hundred of older adults in Illinois in the United States. They measured  feelings of purpose, personal growth, self acceptance, autonomy and environmental mastery. Doing well on these markers had a positive relationship with our mental health and cognition. Moreover it helped to protect against the early onset of dementia. There is an increasing body of research data not available, suggesting the central importance of staying connected and with a positive purpose in life, especially as we age.
