Violence and a violent society.
Two programmes on TV last night had violence as their core subject. One about the massacre at Sandy Hook, Elementary School in the US, the other about the rape and murder of a women on a bus by a gang of men in New Delhi. These two tragic events brought home the madness of violence. The one about Sandy Hook followed the progress of those who had suffered the death of a loved one. It considered how difficult it is to come to terms with and the ongoing agony of a life cut short by tragic events. There were also many teachers killed on that day. The Indian case also considered the life of the parents that have suffered from this terrible crime. In addition the ramification to the political and social system. The Indian government had previously taken out an injunction preventing the film from being shown in India. The action was taken no doubt because they are so ashamed by those in parliament today who have been accused of rape and nothing has happened to them. What was so interesting and shocking was the mind set of those who were interviewed and involved in the case. Their attitude was that the women was responsible for her rape and murder. Its this mind set that underpins the pervasive abuse of women across India today. Unless this is changed little will change.
