Breast feeding is best.
A study has published its finding that breast feeding for at least one year provides a beneficial effect on a longitudinal basis into adult life. Apparently some 6,000 babies in Brazil in 1992 were followed up recently and 3,500 adults took an IQ test. Those that had been breast fed the longest correlated to the higher IQ's. There is all the necessary goodness in the milk that provides that brain with sufficient nutrients for a good start in life. The study also revealed that this beneficial effect continues into education and job prospects. Could it be that another factor is at work - namely the good bonding that the baby has with its mother - acts as a basis for later interpersonal relationships and confidence? We in Britain are the least likely population to breast feed our babies. Its almost the exclusively the preserve of the middle classes. This was not the case in the Brazilian study. So stripping out all other factors caeteris paribus its a good idea to breast feed your baby for up to one year. However an important factor not taken into consideration was the IQ and educational background of the parent of the subjects, this may have had a significant impact on the results.
