The Super-Rich and Us.
Over the last two weeks we have had an excellent programme on BBC Two considering the gap between the super rich and the rest of us. The gap has in the last 40 years grown to a staggering degree. Today 1% own some 14% of the national wealth, and their size of the cake is getting larger and larger. Is this sustainable - professor Thomas Piketty the French Nobel Prize winner in his celebrated book Capital: In The 21st Century doesn't think so? In the short term it may survive, but in the longer term it is sowing the seeds of its own destruction. The Faustian pack will eventually break down, when the majority realise that this so called democratic society just doesn't work for them. In 2011 we had the riots in London only one year before the Olympics and this is a precursor of things to come - unless things change for the majority. The new Darwinism is what is termed zero hours contract working. A person has no guarantee of a regular income. Its as it was in the London docks in the middle of last century when men would turn up at the gates and hope for a days work and many were sent home empty handed. It cannot continue like this otherwise there will be a revolution on our streets.
