The Greeks go the polls today.
After many years of austerity the Greeks go to the polls today. Many think that the far left Syriza party will come in first. Since the financial crash in 2008 they have suffered more than most other nations from all the belt tightening. Families have had their salaries cut in half. I heard on the radio that they were now coping on as little as £300 each month. So no heating, no electricity, no going out for a meals etc. The health service has collapsed with many necessary drugs now being too expensive to be prescribe. Its therefore not surprising they are fed up with all the snake oil salesman peddling are kinds of new remedies to cure the problems of their nation. The cradle of democracy is having a major crisis. God know how they will get out of this hole? They need time to deal with their debts, but think that the burden is now so large that its impossible to pay it all back to the European Central Bank and that is why we have these elections. It puts the whole European project now in doubt. The one size fits all economic policy just doesn't work. Is Germany the same as Greece? Of course not. We have a dichotomy between the sever austerity on the one hand and the voice of democracy on the other. The Greek people have had enough of austerity and have voted accordingly. Moreover we have seen a rise of a Marxist critique of modern capitalism and it has been found wanting. Can this happen in Britain?
