Jane Brown aged 89 has died.
During the 1960's there was a gang of British photographers like Bailey, Donovan, Litchfield, Armstrong-Jones and the redoubtable Jane Brown. Short in stature but mighty when at the height of her profession. Some of the most famous pictures of the age were taken by her. The most memorable and outstanding being that of Samuel Becket taken in the corridor at the stage door of the Royal Court Theatre. All her pictures where in black and white. She made her name working for The Observer when Astor and then Telford where editors. They had great confidence in her natural ability to take the shot that made the story. There is a luminosity and clarity that was her indelible signature. Each picture has an emotional warmth. The one of Mike Jagger taken over lunch at the Garrick Club is quite lovely in its relaxed intimacy. She didn't suffer fools gladly and was as sharp as a tack, and could be acerbic when necessary. As someone who has always enjoyed photography - I will miss seeing her latest shot.
