This three part series Human Universe on BBC 2 introduced by professor Brian Cox is thought provoking and also disturbing. He seeks to consider the scientific evidence as to whether we are alone or are there other civilizations like us out there in the universe? He uses the Easter Island and their abandoned culture as a way of illuminating this discussion. Are we in danger of using up all our natural resources and thereby making our very survival more problematic and precarious? He concludes that on balance he thinks we are unique and alone, there is at present no evidence to suggest that there are other similar civilization in the universe. Consequently we all therefore have a particular responsibility to act responsibly in order to preserve this very precious world that is in danger and in a 'delicate balance'.
We are all familiar with the argument regarding deforestation, pollution, global warming, mass migration, droughts and water shortages, pandemics like Ebola. Wars and rumors of wars that is very easy to feel overwhelmed that there is little we can do, but if we all takes responsibility we can make a deference. We are seeing in the UK the rise of the Green Party from a small base. So lets not give up hope, there is a better tomorrow.
