Facial recognition.
Over some 7.2 billion years of evolutionary history we have developed an absolute unique individualistic face for immediate recognition. Of all the parts of the body the face is a one off. We all (by and large) have hands, feet, bodies of various shapes and over sizes, but the the face is one that belongs to us. That's why when facial surgeons like professor Peter Butler of The Royal Free hospital in London take such care in choosing patients that will receive a new face as the psychological impact of looking in the mirror and seeing someone new looking back can be so traumatic. This was indeed the case in WW2 when pioneering work was carried out in East Grinstead hospital where new parts of the face had them grafted on from attachments from the upper arm. So the latest research published in the journal of Nature Communications is so interesting as it has the whole of the DNA sequencing at their disposal. Michael Norman a population geneticists argues that evolution has made our face unique. That's why we say 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder'. Research is being carried out in order to understand more of this particular aspect of ourselves. This new knowledge is of particular interest in the international security services like MI5 and MI6 and the CIA.
