This weekly erudite discussion programme chaired magnificently by Lord Melvyn Bragg - on BBC Sounds, has been the benchmark of a Reithian tradition - of the very finest in broadcasting. As Lord John Reith, the first, director general (1922-1938) set out the founding principles for the BBC back in October 1922 to: educate, to inform and to entertain. The In Or Time met these conditions in a journey that started in October 1998. The first one was about War in the 20th Century - the show always had some of the brightest and best in their respective disciplines. The last one this morning was one the chairman’s list of favourites and it didn’t disappoint - Bird Migration. It’s far more complicated than we think. There are different migration processes across the globe, including the recent idea of the importance of smell. Other ideas are: internal compass, DNA, the magnet field, the sun, geography and landmarks, longitudinal eques, but there are unknown ideas - that will be discovered in years to come. So the end of an extraordinary journey, where we have been - educated, informed and entertained. Thankfully we have many of theses programmes available via the different BBC Apps. Like: In Our Time Philosophy, Culture, Religion etc. Enjoy.
