Wolf Hall came to its conclusion last night on BBC One. Mark Rylance, played the role of Thomas Cromwell, to perfection. Henry VIII - was Damien Lewis, again managing to capture the wilful and mercurial power of an absolute ruler. Living with Henry, must have been similar to being in the presence of another maniacal dictator Saddam Hussain of Iraq. They can turn on a - sixpence - having the power of life or death. Cromwell is beheaded at a most inauspicious location, with a large crowd of onlookers. Cromwell, sees in the background - in his red Cardinal robes his fellow traveller and friend - Wolseley. At the end of this magnificent series, it’s brought out the very best of our acting in historical settings across the land. I cannot recall a better or more fitting representation of the Reithian tradition at the BBC - than this production. Hilary Mantel, if she were still alive - would be pleased with the outcome of her labour.
