The formidable actor Glenda Jackson, has died aged 87 at home in Blackheath, London. I first saw her in a Peter Hall, RSC production of Hamlet at the Aldwych Theatre in 1965. David Warner, was the student Hamlet and she was the seductive Ophelia. Again at the Aldwych Theatre when she was in the Peter Brook production of Marat Sade in 1967. I watched her, spellbound the other day in the film Elizabeth is Missing on BBC Four, play the role of an elderly lady suffering from the onset of dementia. She was a consummate actor of great integrity, where the text was all important. Another light has gone out.
