The Six Day War in 1967.
It was 50 years ago today that the Six Day War started. At the time I had volunteered to work on the kibbutz in Israel and was waiting in Golders Green to be sent off. On the Tuesday we flew to Tel Aviv and I was then transported with a few others to Erez kibbutz in Gaza. For the next few days we were digging trenches in the burning hot sunshine at 50c degrees. On the Saturday evening we drove to Tel Aviv and watched the war at the cinema, where the victories Moshe Dayan was cheered by the audience. I stayed for a further six months and worked at En Gedi kibbutz and at a bar in Eilat. The reverberations of that war and its aftermath continue in the Middle East today, and some have suggested have led indirectly to the terrorist attacks on the streets of London.
