Paul Durand-Ruel 1831-1922.
Does that name mean anything to you? I didn't to me until I went for the third time to this exceptionally fine and comprehensive exhibition of Impressionist at the National Gallery until the end of the month. There are pictures by Renoir, Monet, Manet, Pissaro, Sisley and a host of other great artists. Its interesting to think - had these young impoverished artists not had this generous benefactor - their names may not have made it into the public domain. Some of the pictures are so light and fresh as if painted yesterday. Manet's collection of five poplars all set together is so exquisite and enchanting. I have never seen them all together before. If you go to one exhibition this year, make sure its this one. Your won't regret it for a moment, despite is being packed.
