The beginning of the end of the BBC.
I write as a fan of the BBC, but I fear that the end is in sight for the old system of financing namely the - licence fee. The Royal Charter is up for renewal in 2017, and by then even more technologies that will have arrived to undermine the system. However more importantly it seems to me that the fee is a form of 'poll tax' on the less well off in society. Although not a princely sum, currently - £145 pa - but if your on a fixed income, then inflation will have hit you hard over the ensuring years. Its therefore a regressive tax, not linked to the ability to pay, unlike for example income tax. In addition the bosses at the BBC have themselves to blame for this sorry state of affairs, giving themselves fat incomes and bonuses, a bit like bankers and we all know what a load of 'wankers' they are. There is also a lack of political nous in their dealings with government. They always appear as 'self-serving' - arguing for more money and we now know where it goes, not into making first class dramas or innovative programmes. The recent decision therefore to axe - BBC Three is not astute but myopic. Furthermore I read last week that the BBC are resisting any change in the law regarding prosecuting those who don't pay the Licence Fee. They want it to stay a criminal offence and not a civil one. What happened to their 'liberal morality'?
